Restorative Dentistry (Fillings, Repairs)
Restorative Materials are used to repair teeth which have been compromised due to cavities, tooth decay or trauma. Tooth decay is caused by plaque accumulation on teeth. Trauma can be caused by accidents or habits such as grinding your teeth and biting on hard objects.
Several materials are available to repair teeth, the most common being bonded composite fillings made from a tooth-coloured resin which looks and feels like natural teeth. We can advise you what material is best for you and your specific needs.
Root Canals (Endodontics)
Root canal treatment is the removal of the tooth’s infected nerve supply in the root and pulp chamber, which also contains blood supply and lymphatic tissue. When a cavity is deep and close or in contact with the pulp chamber, the nerve tissue gets infected and causes pain.
Other common causes of pulp damage requiring root canal treatment are cracked teeth, a deep cavity or injury to the tooth. If left untreated, an abscess forms, often with swelling and discharge. These abscesses can be very painful and also destroy surrounding bone. Root canal treatment involves the removal of tissues in the pulp chamber and associated canals, cleaning the space and filling them.
The purpose of this endodontic treatment is to remove infection and save teeth which would otherwise be extracted. Crowns are recommended for root canal treated teeth to save them from fracture.
Dental Crowns (Caps)
Crowns are dental restorations that protect damaged, cracked or broken teeth, and teeth that have had root canal treatment. Dental crowns, often referred to as caps, cover the entire visible part of the tooth that lies above the gum line. These are made of several materials, including porcelain, metal or new synthetics such as zirconia.
The purpose of these crowns is to preserve and save teeth from irreversible fractures and consequent loss.
Dental Bridges
Bridges are false teeth that are designed to ‘bridge’ the gap created by one or more missing teeth. The most common bridge is a fixed bridge supported by crowns on adjacent natural teeth. Bridges can also be supported by implants.
Implant Dentistry
Dental implants are metal posts positioned into the jawbone beneath your gums to act as an anchor for replacement teeth. Dental implants replicate the entire tooth, including the crown and the root. Bone loss is kept to a minimum and healthy adjacent teeth are preserved.
Extractions
A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone. Common reasons for extracting a permanent tooth are a broken tooth, severely decayed tooth, for orthodontic (straightening) treatment, and impacted wisdom teeth.
We will try to save as many teeth as possible by restoring them with a filling, crown or other dental treatment, leaving extraction as the last option.
Bonding
Composite tooth bonding is a restorative procedure that uses tooth enamel-coloured composite resin (plastic) to repair teeth that are decayed, chipped, fractured or discoloured. Tooth gaps can also be closed. Unlike porcelain veneers, which require laboratory work, bonding is done in the dental office.
Braces (Orthodontics)
Orthodontics offers a wide range of treatment options to bring teeth, lips and jaws into proper alignment. Treatment options include traditional braces, ceramic braces and the Invisalign system which uses clear removable aligners.
Dentures
Dentures are a removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. They are made of acrylic resin sometimes combined with metal attachments. Complete dentures replace all the teeth; partial dentures are considered when some natural teeth remain and are retained by metal clasps attached to the natural teeth.
Gum Surgery
Periodontal or gum disease is an infection that affects the gums and jaw bone, which can lead to a loss of gum tissue and teeth. There are two major stages – gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the milder and reversible form, and periodontal disease is more severe. In some cases, gum surgery will be required to stop the progression of the disease and reverse some tissue loss.
Oral Cancer Examination
Oral cancer starts in the cells of the mouth, tongue or throat. Oral cancer screening is a routine part of a dental examination. In this exam, your dentist will feel for lumps or irregular tissue changes in your neck, head, face, and inside your mouth. We will also look for sores or discoloured tissue in your mouth.
Sealants
Dental sealants, are usually applied to the chewing surface of teeth, act as a barrier against decay-causing bacteria. Most often, the sealants are applied to the back teeth, the premolars and molars.
Teeth Whitening
Teeth naturally darken with age, however staining may be caused by various foods and beverages such as coffee, tea, berries, some drugs such as tetracycline, smoking, or a trauma to a tooth. There are various teeth whitening options available, including in-office and at-home bleaching.
Veneers
Veneers are strong, thin pieces of ceramic or resin material that are bonded to the teeth. Veneers are used to repair chipped, decayed or stained teeth and may help in closing gaps between teeth.
Periodontics
Periodontal disease, also called periodontitis, is an advanced gum disease that poses a threat to a patient’s overall dental and oral health. The gums are compromised by bacteria that infects the patient’s bone tissue and eventually separates the gums from the teeth.
